Current Role: FS Intern
Meet Hance Dorsch, one of our talented FS interns! Over the past year and a half, Hance has had the chance to add to his finance and accounting skillset to a variety of projects across the division
Shortly after he was hired, he helped reimagine the Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) portion of the university’s 2023 Annual Financial Report. Working alongside a small group of dedicated colleagues, he helped ensure straightforward communication on a technical and tricky project prepared for key stakeholders.
“It was a daunting task, but seeing the completed, final versions was incredibly rewarding and was a great introduction to working in Financial Services,” Dorsch said.
Hance also worked with the Travel & Payment Services group to track the university’s purchasing card program spend and rebate, as well as creating a projection. The projection captured prior spend data and used that to create a financial projection that included estimated amounts.
“Hance wasn’t familiar with our business processes and had to get up to speed quickly, which he did,” said Director of Travel and Payment Services Perry Hull. “He was also great about asking questions throughout the project and made the necessary changes to his model as he obtained new information. Hance was also completely dependable and had a great work ethic.”
Assistant Manager of Payables Production Bella Parkinson oversaw Hance’s work in Optical Character Recognition (OCR). OCR is the process of turning an image of text into digitally recognized text.
“His work refined the AI training of the initial 25 suppliers running through OCR, including gathering samples and adjusting the capture fields within ABBYY.” she said. ABBYY is an AI integration software that Accounts Payable uses to recognize and digitize invoice images.
“He was efficient in pushing the OCR invoices through web verification and made adjustments to the training batches when it was necessary,” said Parkinson. “He’s been a huge help to the process!”
