Since January, Financial Services intern Gabriela Mostacero has been gaining real-world experience through her work in data analysis for several different groups in the division.

She’s collaborated closely with data specialists from Financial Services Technology Support (FSTS) to help fulfill data requests for analysis for the recently formed Service Delivery team. She has also had the chance to prepare data analysis for the Provost’s Office.

One of her favorite projects involved designing an interactive dashboard for historical transaction data.

“It was exciting to take a huge amount of raw data and turn it into something visual, intuitive and easy to understand,” she said. The experience allowed her to sharpen her skills in data storytelling and user experience, while also helping her communicate complex insight clearly and effectively.

Her internship has also enriched the academic lessons she’s learning in the classroom.

“I’ve strengthened key skills like data analysis, communication and problem solving,” she said. “Working across teams has also improved my collaboration, time management and adaptability which are all skills to help me stay organized and perform in both group and individual academic projects.”

As Gabriela looks toward launching her professional career, she believes the skills she’s learned as an FS intern will help her hit the ground running in the workforce.

“An internship is FS offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, impactful industry. I think students can gain highly transferable skills like data analysis, strategic thinking, client communication and problem-solving, which are sought after across industries,” she said.

One piece of advice Gabriela has for new interns? Ask questions early and often.

“It shows that you’re eager to learn, it helps you avoid mistakes and it accelerates your growth. Internships are for learning – don’t be afraid to speak up!” she said.

In addition to the practical lessons she’s learned throughout her time as an FS intern, she’s realized the value of leaning on mentors for guidance.

“John Nilsson and Melanie Conover are the best mentors an intern could have,” she said. “They are constantly encouraging me to try my best and they give me the confidence to step outside of my comfort zone to grow personally and professionally. Their guidance, patience and unwavering support have made a huge impact on my internship experience and I truly couldn’t be more grateful.”
