Second annual Travel Symposium shares updates from department

The Travel Department held their second annual Travel Symposium on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at the S.J. Quinney College of Law. The event was an opportunity for campus community members to interact with the Travel team, visit with off-campus vendors and learn about new developments in the department.

Attendees connected with vendors from businesses across the Salt Lake Valley, including The Gateway, the Grand American Hotel and Christopherson Business Travel before settling in for a question-and-answer session with the Travel team.

They were treated to a presentation from Travel Manager Melaney McKellar about changes that have been implemented since last year’s symposium. These updates include an improved wire transfer process, streamlined per diem and university-covered international travel insurance.

The Travel team also explained the new travel fee structure, which is based off of the booking method the user chooses.

“The new structure rewards users who book through Concur and it increases fees for users who book outside of the system,” McKellar told the crowd. “We really do want to encourage travelers to use the university’s preferred vendors.”

Travel symposium attendees were encouraged to attend afternoon breakout sessions that covered topics like auditing, the differences between unassigned and unexpensed transactions, and the relationship between Concur and PeopleSoft.

“At the end of the day, our team is here to help,” said McKellar. “We’re here to help you navigate the travel system as a whole – we want the entire experience to be easier for you as a university employee.”
